New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has officially recommended Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as his successor, forwarding the proposal to the law ministry as part of the formal appointment process. Justice Gavai is currently the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court after CJI Khanna.
Justice Gavai is scheduled to take office as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, succeeding CJI Khanna, who will retire on May 13. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Justice Gavai.
His tenure as Chief Justice will last approximately six months, concluding with his retirement in November 2025.
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Justice Gavai joined the Bar on March 16, 1985. He initially worked with the late Bar Raja S. Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and High Court judge, until 1987. Afterward, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990 and later primarily before the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Gavai has expertise in Constitutional Law and Administrative Law. He served as the Standing Counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur, Amravati Municipal Corporation, and Amravati University. Additionally, he represented several autonomous bodies and corporations, including SICOM and DCVL, and various municipal councils in the Vidarbha region.
From August 1992 to July 1993, Gavai held the positions of Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench. He became Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench on January 17, 2000 and was elevated to Additional Judge of the High Court on November 14, 2003.
Justice Gavai was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court on November 12, 2005, and presided over various Benches in Mumbai as well as Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, and is set to retire on November 23, 2025.
