Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will be sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India today. The term of the current CJI, Sanjiv Khanna, ended on 13 May. Today, President Draupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to Justice Gavai.
Justice Gavai’s name was in the seniority list after CJI Khanna. Therefore, Justice Khanna put his name forward. However, his tenure is only 7 months.
According to the profile given on the Supreme Court website, Justice Gavai was promoted as a Supreme Court judge on 24 May 2019. His retirement date is 23 November 2025.
Justice Gavai was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He started his legal career in 1985. Started independent practice in Bombay High Court in 1987. Earlier, he worked with former Advocate General and High Court Judge Late Raja S Bhosale.
He practised law in the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990. He was appointed as Assistant Public Prosecutor and Additional Public Prosecutor in Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court from August 1992 to July 1993. He was promoted as Additional Judge of Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003. He became Permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court on 12 November 2005.
Justice Gavai will be the second Dalit CJI of the country. Before him, Justice KG Balakrishnan became the Chief Justice of India. Justice Balakrishnan became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the year 2007.
As a Supreme Court judge, Justice Gavai has been involved in many historic decisions. These include upholding the 2016 demonetisation decision of Modi government and declaring the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional.
Justice Suryakant comes after Justice Gavai in the seniority list. It is likely that he will be made the 53rd Chief Justice.
