Guwahati: The Kamakhya temple located atop Nilachal Hill reopened its doors to devotees on Thursday, following a four-day closure during the Ambubachi Mela, according to officials.
The annual festival lasts for four days when the temple remains closed, symbolizing the menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya. The doors were shut from Sunday, and worship activities resumed this morning after the ‘nibritti’, or closure period.
The Ambubachi Mela, which began on June 22, drew thousands of visitors amid extensive security arrangements, as reported by officials from Kamrup Metropolitan district.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his wishes on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “As the doors of Maa Kamakhya open to devotees in Nibritti, which marks the completion of the 4-day #Ambubachi Mahayog, I pray to Maa Kamakhya for the welfare of Bharat. May Maa Kamakhya bless everyone with abundance and guide civilization forward. Jai Maa Kamakhya.”
The festival is a major religious and tourist event in the state. During the main days, VIP and VVIP movements were restricted at the temple, with visitors barred from entry from June 23 onward.
To manage the large influx of devotees, the government established multiple camps, coordinated with 24 departments to ensure smooth proceedings, and set up facilities for medical aid, police personnel, and transportation across the Brahmaputra River with enough ferries.
In addition to police, volunteers and private security guards were engaged to maintain order and safety during the event, officials mentioned.
