Tamil Nadu: DMK has allocated a Rajya Sabha seat to Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), and Kamal Haasan, the party’s founder and a renowned actor, has been named as the candidate for the Upper House. Murali Appas, leader of MNM, announced that the party has passed a resolution supporting Kamal Haasan’s election to the Rajya Sabha.

Additionally, the DMK-led alliance has announced its three candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 19. These candidates include Salma, Advocate P Wilson, and SR Sivalingam. With a 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, each candidate needs at least 34 votes to win a seat. The DMK-led INDIA bloc, which has 158 MLAs (DMK: 133, Congress: 17, VCK: 4, CPI: 2, CPM: 2), is well-positioned to secure four seats comfortably.

Kamal Haasan established Makkal Needhi Maiam during a public gathering in Madurai in 2018. The party did not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but supported the DMK-led coalition in the state, which had promised a Rajya Sabha seat as part of the alliance. In the 2021 State Assembly elections, MNM garnered 2.62% of the votes.

However, Kamal Haasan recently became embroiled in a political controversy after he allegedly claimed that “Kannada has its roots in Tamil.” BJP Karnataka President Vijayendra Yediyurappa responded critically on X, demanding an unconditional apology from Haasan. Yediyurappa accused him of arrogance and disrespect toward the Kannada community, highlighting Haasan’s work in Kannada films and accusing him of ungratefulness.

Yediyurappa underscored Kannada’s historical importance, emphasizing its status as a prominent language both in India and globally. He condemned Haasan for allegedly insulting Kannada and forgetting the community’s generosity, asserting that Kannada has been a respected language for centuries and that Haasan’s remarks reveal his ungrateful attitude.
