On October 20, Srinagar saw the launch of its inaugural international marathon, flagged off by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah alongside Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty at 6:20 a.m.
Demonstrating his own athleticism, Abdullah joined the runners for part of the event, accompanied by his security team.
This landmark occasion marks the first time Kashmir has hosted a major international marathon, featuring participation from 2,000 athletes, including 59 international competitors. Runners can choose between a full marathon of 42 kilometers and a half marathon of 21 kilometers.
At a press conference, Raja Yaqoob Farooq, the director of tourism in Kashmir, highlighted that this marathon has attracted registrations from 29 Union Territories and 13 countries, with 30 to 35 local participants joining in. He emphasized that the event aims to convey a message of peace and fitness from Kashmir to the world, with all participating athletes serving as ambassadors for the region. Farooq also mentioned the opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s culinary specialties, traditional crafts like paper mache and Pashmina.
As part of their experience, athletes will enjoy local cuisine and visit renowned sites such as the Gulmarg ski resort, where they can ride the famous cable car. In addition to the marathon, participants have the chance to appreciate the beauty of Kashmir during its picturesque autumn season, characterized by stunning lakes and alpine forests.
Kashmir previously hosted the G20 meeting in May and a sports car racing event, which have helped to boost tourism in the area, reinforcing the perception of the Valley as a peaceful and safe travel destination.
