A key suspect in the murder of four family members in Amethi was apprehended late Friday. On Saturday, while authorities were escorting him to recover the weapons used in the assault, he attempted to seize a police officer’s firearm and open fire at the police. In the subsequent altercation, the suspect was shot in the leg.

On October 4, 2024, the Special Task Force (STF) from Gautam Buddha Nagar arrested Chandan Verma, the son of Mayaram and a resident of Teliya Kot, Kotwali Nagar Raebareli, at the Jewar Toll Plaza in connection with the murders. He was later brought to the Shivratanganj police station.

Following his interrogation, authorities recovered a homemade pistol and a motorcycle (UP 33 BU 4576) linked to the crime. On October 5, police teams from Shivratanganj and Mohanganj retrieved the motorcycle and the pistol near a canal track in Pure Vindhya Diwan, Mohanganj district, Amethi. During the recovery, Chandan Verma allegedly snatched a pistol from Inspector Madan Kumar Singh and attempted to shoot him.

In self-defense, Inspector Sachchidanand Rai fired back, hitting the suspect in the right leg, causing him to collapse on the spot. ASP Harendra Kumar stated, “Four individuals were killed on October 3, and the main suspect, Chandan Verma, was arrested the following day. During questioning, he disarmed SI Madan Kumar and attacked the police team, prompting them to fire back, resulting in his injury. He has been taken to the hospital for treatment, and further legal proceedings are underway.”

The police report indicated that various charges have been filed against Verma: FIR No. 271/24 under Section 109 BNS and 3/25/27 of the Arms Act at the Mohanganj Police Station, and FIR No. 121/24 under Section 103(1) BNS and 3(2)V of the SC/ST Act at the Shivratanganj Police Station.

On October 3, 2024, Chandan Verma allegedly shot and killed four members of a Dalit teacher’s family in Amethi. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, and the Amethi police have promised stringent legal action against those responsible. Investigations continue, with the police taking necessary steps regarding the arrest and recovery process.
