New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led a special ceremony on Monday by preparing ‘Kheer’ ahead of the inaugural budget session of the newly elected government in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. This unique tradition marked the beginning of the financial proceedings, with the Chief Minister expressing gratitude to all contributors to the budget-making process.
Extending her appreciation, she stated, “Congratulations to all leaders, ministers, MLAs, and citizens who shared their suggestions, as well as to our leadership, under whose guidance this budget was formulated.” She emphasized the significance of the event, noting, “This is the first time such a ceremony has been held in Delhi. The sweetness of kheer symbolizes the sweetness of the budget. It has been offered to Lord Ram and will now be shared with those who contributed their ideas.”
The first budget session under the BJP-led government will run from March 24 to March 28, with a possibility of extension. The state budget is set to be presented on March 25. This session holds major importance for the BJP, which returned to power in Delhi after 27 years following the 2025 Assembly elections.
Earlier, traders, shopkeepers, and auto drivers gathered at the Vidhan Sabha to take part in the ‘Kheer’ ceremony. BJP MLA Karnail Singh remarked, “People from all sections of society have been invited. Today marks the first day of the budget session—’Meethi kheer, meetha budget’.”
As part of the proceedings, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will introduce a motion for the election of financial committees, a key step in the assembly’s financial governance. The motion, outlined in the List of Business, calls for the election of nine members each to the Committee on Public Accounts, the Committee on Estimates, and the Committee on Government Undertakings for the term beginning April 1, 2025.
Additionally, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht and Member Om Prakash Sharma will present the First Report of the Business Advisory Committee, outlining the assembly’s legislative agenda. Meanwhile, members Sanjay Goyal and Poonam Sharma will present the First Report of the Committee on Private Members’ Bills.
During the budget session, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will also be tabled in the House, according to a statement from the Delhi Assembly Secretariat. This will be the third CAG report presented in the assembly.
