Kolkata: The Kolkata Police’s Security Control Organisation is actively investigating foreign nationals who arrived in the city with valid documents but have failed to leave after their visas expired.

Sources from the city police revealed that this new initiative was launched amid concerns that many foreigners have managed to obtain fake Indian identity documents, including Indian passports, through illegitimate means, and are now living in Kolkata pretending to be Indian citizens.

Special attention is being given to nationals from Bangladesh and Pakistan who entered with proper visas but did not return. Over the past six weeks, authorities have identified at least six such individuals from these countries, who had secured fake Indian identity documents and started residing permanently in the city as Indian citizens.

One of the most notable cases is Azad Mullick, a Pakistani national, who was arrested last month by Enforcement Directorate officials. It was discovered that Azad first obtained Bangladeshi citizenship through counterfeit documents before moving to Kolkata. There, he procured Indian identity papers, including an Indian passport, using fake documents. He was also involved in rackets related to hawala, fake passports, and fraudulent visas for other countries from his residence on Kolkata’s outskirts.

Earlier this month, authorities identified four family members—Vijay Modi, his wife Kasaulya Modi, and their sons Dilip and Asish—who had been living in Kolkata for some time with both Indian and Bangladeshi passports. They originally arrived with valid visas and stayed in South Kolkata’s Palm Avenue after their visas expired, while secretly acquiring fake Indian documents such as Aadhaar, EPIC cards, and eventually Indian passports.

Additionally, earlier this month, security officials found Sheikh Ramzan, a Bangladeshi citizen, residing in Kolkata’s Tangra area. He had entered Kolkata with a valid visa and later obtained Indian identity documents, allowing him to live in the city as an Indian national.
