Hyderabad: K. T. Rama Rao, working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), drove an autorickshaw to the Telangana State Assembly to draw attention to the challenges faced by autorickshaw drivers after the Congress government introduced a free bus travel scheme.
Accompanied by other BRS MLAs and MLCs, who also arrived in three-wheelers while wearing khaki shirts in solidarity, they organized a rally from MLA Quarters to the Legislature complex. The group carried placards and raised slogans to capture the government’s attention.
Rama Rao criticized the Congress party for failing to fulfill its pre-election promises made to the state’s 800,000 auto drivers. He highlighted the tragic reality of 93 auto drivers who have reportedly died by suicide, attributing these incidents to governmental negligence.
He urged the government to support the families of those who have died and emphasized the need for the immediate release of promised financial aid of ₹12,000. Additionally, he called for the establishment of a welfare board for auto drivers without further delay.
Encouraging autorickshaw drivers to remain hopeful, KTR assured them that the BRS would advocate for their rights. “As a sign of solidarity, we are heading to the Assembly in autos, wearing their uniforms. The BRS stands with auto drivers and will keep fighting for their cause,” he said.
