Patna: Left MLAs staged a dramatic protest in the Bihar Assembly on February 28, using handcuffs as a symbol of their dissent against the Centre’s foreign policies. Members from the CPI-ML, CPI, and CPM expressed their outrage over the perceived mistreatment of Indian expatriates in the United States.
CPI-ML’s Mahboob Alam criticized the Union government for its failure to safeguard the dignity of Indian migrants, stating that Indian citizens are facing humiliation in the US, which undermines their self-respect. The protesters called for the Modi government to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
As the demonstration unfolded, the Left MLAs made their presence known both outside and inside the Assembly, vociferously appealing for government action on behalf of Indian citizens abroad. Despite being reprimanded by the Speaker for their disruptive actions, the MLAs continued to voice their concerns from their seats.
The protest specifically highlighted the deportation of undocumented Indian immigrants, who the Left accused of being treated as prisoners under the Trump administration’s policies, often being handcuffed during their deportations.
This event occurred as the Budget Session of the Bihar Assembly commenced, with the political climate growing tense ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections later in the year. The Opposition parties are expected to ramp up their protests and confrontations leading to the elections as they raise various issues.
