The blast took place in a private firecracker unit (Pataka Factory Blast) in Sengamalpatti near Sivakasi. According to initial information, the blast occurred due while mixing of chemicals. As of the time of writing, explosions in firecrackers are continuing in the factory. In such a situation, there is a fear that many people will be killed in this accident.
According to police and locals, the blast took place at 9:30 am on Tuesday in the Sri Sudarshan Firecracker Unit near Sengamalpatti. Around 80-100 employees were working there at that time. Some people have been evacuated from the factory, who were found badly burned in the fire.
The blast was heard for a kilometer
It is being said that the blast was so powerful that its sound was heard for a kilometer, and white smoke was seen coming out of the building. Locals said that after the blast, small explosions were continuously happening in the firecrackers kept in the unit, due to which the rescue team is facing difficulty in entering the building.
An eyewitness said, ‘The sound of the explosion was so loud that the people around were scared. We immediately informed the fire department, but due to the continuous explosions, no one could enter the unit.’
Sivakasi produces more than 90% of the firecrackers in India. There have been several fatal accidents in the firecracker factory here before. This is the fourth major accident this year. In May last year, 9 people died in a similar major explosion.
