Palamu (Jharkhand): A horrific crime has occurred in Jharkhand’s Palamu area, where a 12-year-old mentally challenged girl was raped and brutally murdered, officials reported on Thursday.
The child’s body was discovered late Wednesday night inside the home of the accused, Tinku Sharma.
News of the incident spread rapidly, leading to outraged locals gathering to confront Sharma, who was attacked before police intervened.
Protests began on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday, with residents blaming the police for their lack of action and demanding swift justice for the victim.
The girl, who lived in Kandu Mohalla in Palamu city, went missing on Wednesday afternoon, prompting her family to search nearby areas. During the search, Sharma informed neighbors that the girl had come to his house asking for mangoes, but he had sent her home. However, suspicion grew when CCTV footage showed Sharma leading the girl away from the area.
When locals confronted him, Sharma provided inconsistent statements and tried to avoid questioning. Concerned by his behavior, a group of residents forced their way into his locked house, where they discovered the girl’s naked, mutilated body.
The shocking discovery sparked outrage among the locals, who immediately attacked Sharma, beating him severely. The situation escalated as more people gathered. Police arrived on the scene and, after considerable effort, managed to rescue Sharma from the mob.
He has since been taken into custody and is receiving treatment at Medini Rai Medical College Hospital.
The crime has led to significant anger within the community, with residents accusing the police of negligence. Locals claimed they informed the police about the girl’s disappearance earlier in the day, but no swift action was taken.
In response to the incident, residents blocked roads for several hours, demanding strict punishment for the accused.
Palamu SDPO Manibhushan Prasad confirmed the arrest of the suspect and stated that a thorough investigation is currently underway.
