During her budget speech, Finance Minister Sitharaman announced that no income tax would be levied on incomes up to Rs 12 lakh, offering substantial relief to taxpayers, particularly the middle class. For salaried individuals, this limit increases to Rs 12.75 lakh, factoring in a standard deduction of Rs 75,000. She highlighted that the new tax regime would be simpler and aimed at benefiting the middle class, though taxpayers must still qualify for various exemptions under the Income Tax Act, such as the Rs 1.5 lakh exemption under section 80CCC and for home loan interest.

Sitharaman stated, “Tax rebates are being provided for normal income up to Rs 12 lakh, ensuring no tax is payable beyond the slab rate reductions.” Her announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from the treasury benches, led by PM Modi.

Following the budget presentation, the Lok Sabha was adjourned and will reconvene on February 3 at 11 a.m.
