Move protest against Waqf Act to New Delhi: CM Banerjee tells Bengal Muslim leaders

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Muslim religious leaders on Wednesday to relocate their protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act from West Bengal to Delhi. “Maintain peace in your localities in West Bengal. There’s no benefit in continuing the movement here. Move your protests to New Delhi. Avoid creating tension in the state due to provocations.

Avoid creating tension in the state due to provocations from the BJP. Instead, confront those who are inciting tension,” Banerjee stated during a meeting with Imams, Muezzins, and other religious leaders from the Muslim community.

The meeting was reportedly organized to outline a strategy for opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Banerjee emphasized the need to challenge the law through legal means, stating, “That is why I am saying we need to fight this battle in New Delhi and not here in West Bengal.”

She advised the religious leaders to approach President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express their objections to the Act. Banerjee assured that members of the Trinamool Congress Parliamentary team would support any movement concerning this issue in the national capital.

“The new Waqf Act contradicts the Indian Constitution and undermines the federal structure of our democracy. Articles 18 and 35 of the Constitution highlight the state’s rights over any property, and this Act is in violation of that,” she remarked.

Additionally, Banerjee pointed out that Article 26 of the Constitution protects the right to practice any religion, which includes property inheritance and maintenance rights. She asserted, “These rights have been taken away from the people. Both Ram and Rahim’s rights have been infringed upon.”

Previously, CM Banerjee had declared that the new Act would not be enforced in West Bengal and pledged to protect the interests and properties of the minority community. The BJP responded by stating that a Chief Minister does not have the authority to declare that a Central Act will not be implemented in their state.
