Mumbai: A 40-year-old female teacher from a well-known Mumbai school has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old male student multiple times over the past year, police reports said.

The woman, who is married with children, faces allegations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, and the Indian Penal Code. The school has not issued any statement regarding the case as of now.

According to authorities, the accused English teacher taught the student during his Class XI year. She claimed she was attracted to the teen during meetings held to organize a dance group for the school’s annual function in December 2023. She also reportedly made sexual gestures toward him in January 2024.

The victim was initially hesitant and began avoiding her, but the teacher allegedly sought help from a female friend—also charged in the case—who is not affiliated with the school. This friend reportedly reached out to the student and told him that relationships between older women and teenage boys are common, implying they were a good match. Following this, the student agreed to meet the teacher.

The teacher then picked up the boy in a Sedan and took him to a secluded location, where she forcibly undressed and sexually assaulted him. When the boy became anxious in the following days, she allegedly administered him anti-anxiety medication.

The vehicle involved has been seized for investigation. Further reports suggest that the teacher would then get the student drunk and take him to luxury hotels in South Mumbai and near the airport, where she coerced him into sexual acts.

The case came to light after the student’s family noticed a change in his behavior and confronted him. When he shared his experience, his family chose to keep it quiet, hoping he would soon finish school and the teacher would stop bothering him.

However, after completing his Class 12 examinations and leaving school, the student was contacted again by the teacher through one of her domestic staff and asked to meet her. This prompted the family to report the matter to police.

A case has been registered under multiple sections, including 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act (pertaining to sexual assault), along with provisions of the IPC and the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
