New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice of the alleged sexual assault of a 19-year-old student at Anna University in Chennai. In a statement on X, the Commission condemned the incident and expressed its support for the victim in her pursuit of justice.

The NCW emphasized that the accused is a “habitual offender” and criticized the Tamil Nadu Police for their negligence, which they believe has allowed him to continue committing such crimes. They raised concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Tamil Nadu.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has instructed the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police to ensure the victim receives free medical care and protection. She also urged the addition of Section 71 of the BNS, 2023, to the FIR for stricter penalties and called for action against officers who disclosed the victim’s identity, violating Supreme Court guidelines and Section 72 of the BNS.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday night when a second-year student of Anna University was assaulted on campus. Police have arrested one individual in connection with the case. Additionally, workers from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged protests against the ruling DMK government following the assault.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai criticized the DMK-led state government, claiming that crimes against women are at an all-time high. He described the incident as shocking, noting that two unidentified individuals entered the university campus, assaulted a male companion, and sexually assaulted the female student, leaving her injured. He pointed out that the campus’s CCTV system was not operational, reflecting the current state of law enforcement and governance in Tamil Nadu.

According to Chennai Police, the survivor, a second-year BE student at Guindy Engineering College, filed a complaint at the Kotturpuram All Women Police Station. In her complaint dated December 23, she alleged that an unidentified man threatened and assaulted her while she was conversing with a friend on campus around 8 PM. Following her report, a case has been registered, and an investigation is ongoing.
