New Delhi: The Indian Army strongly condemned the killing of innocent civilians in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that such attacks will be met with firm and punitive measures. This statement followed heavy mortar shelling by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC), which resulted in 13 deaths—including a soldier—and injured 59 others.
The army expressed solidarity with the civilians affected by the indiscriminate artillery shelling in the Poonch sector. It emphasized that the enemy’s malicious aims have been and will continue to be thwarted through resolute and retaliatory actions.
This shelling came just a day after India conducted Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK. Despite the successful counter-terror strikes, ceasefire violations by Pakistan persisted for the 14th consecutive day, escalating tensions along the LoC.
During the cross-border firing, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, a 32-year-old from Palwal, Haryana, was martyred. He succumbed to injuries sustained during intense shelling while stationed on the front line. The army paid tribute to Kumar, acknowledging his bravery and sacrifice in defending India’s sovereignty.
The Ministry of Defence reported that, during the night of May 7-8, Pakistan’s forces launched unprovoked fire using small arms and artillery across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army responded with proportional force.
The ongoing violence, especially against civilian areas, has intensified calls for a strong and sustained response to Pakistan’s repeated ceasefire violations, highlighting the need to protect India’s borders and civilians.
