New Delhi: A two-member committee was formed to investigate the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, which resulted in 18 fatalities and numerous injuries. The committee, consisting of Narsingh Deo, PCCM/Northern Railway, and Pankaj Gangwar, PCSC Northern Railway, visited the site, interviewed witnesses, and obtained CCTV footage from platforms 14 and 15, where large crowds had gathered to board trains to Prayagraj for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela.

The panel is examining the incident’s circumstances, including the potential role of rumors that may have caused passengers to switch platforms, leading to the crush on the staircase at platform 14. This incident occurred amid significant crowd management challenges at several railway stations in northern and eastern India, as many passengers sought to travel to the holy city.

DCP Railway K.P.S. Malhotra attributed the stampede primarily to a surge in passengers coinciding with the delays of two trains. In response to the overwhelming crowd, the Railways had arranged for four special trains to help manage the unexpected influx.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is working to assist all those affected by this tragic incident.”

The Railways has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries.
