Guwahati: In a pioneering move for Indian Railways, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has partnered with IRCON for the maintenance of electrification infrastructure, including Overhead Equipment (OHE) and Power Supply Installation (PSI). This agreement was formalized on Thursday by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and IRCON International Limited Chief Managing Director H. M. Gupta.
According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the MoU will focus on the maintenance of OHE and PSI in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions. He noted that electrification efforts in these divisions are advancing rapidly, with most sections already electrified and the remaining 425 Route Kilometers expected to be completed by June next year.
With the swift progress in electrification, the need for trained railway personnel for regular maintenance and emergency response has increased significantly, as electric traction is crucial for train operations. To address this, railway authorities have chosen to engage IRCON for a two-year contract to handle maintenance and breakdown services, marking a significant step toward systematic upkeep.
The MoU also aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and provide access to advanced technologies and expertise in managing electrification infrastructure. Established in 1976, IRCON is recognized for its capability to undertake complex infrastructure projects, particularly in challenging environments both in India and internationally.
NFR operates across the northeastern states, as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar, covering over 6,400 kilometers of track.
