NIT Silchar professor arrested for sexual harassment of student

An Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam, Koteshwar Raju Dhenukonda, was arrested on Friday on charges of sexually harassing a student.

Silchar: An Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam, Koteshwar Raju Dhenukonda, was arrested on Friday on charges of sexually harassing a student. The professor, who was teaching in the Electrical Engineering department, was suspended after a complaint was filed by the victim, a student at the institute. The incident occured on March 20 when the professor invited the student to his chamber under the pretext of discussing her low grades. the student claimed that during the meeting, the professor made inappropriate physical contact and played obscene songs on his computer.

In response to the allegations, NIT Sichar sealed the professor’s chamber where the harassment took place and is providing support to the victim to ensure her safety. The matter has been referred to the institute’s internal Complaints Committee for investigation. The student described feeling to trapped in the situation and was able to escape when a a friend called her. The authorities have pledged to provide the necessary assistance to the victim during this difficult time.

The arrest of Koteshwar Raju Dhenukonda followed an attempt to evade the police. According to Cachar SP Numal Mahatta, the professor tried to hide by locking his quarter from outside. However, police tracked his mobile phone location and apprehended him at around 5:30 pm. In the wake of the incident, protest broke out on campus, leading to a drop in student attendance, as many students participated in demonstrations. The college administration assured that the situation has returned to normal and reaffirmed its commitment to the investigation.
