Hyderabad: The number of people affected by adulterated toddy in Hyderabad has increased to 37, with six more individuals hospitalized on Thursday. Out of these, four are in critical condition.

The six new patients arrived at hospitals complaining of vomiting and diarrhea. Since Wednesday morning, the tragedy has resulted in five deaths, all residents of Kukatpally.

According to officials, 31 individuals are currently receiving treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), with four in critical condition and on dialysis. The others are stable.

The deceased have been identified as Sita Ram, Swarupa, Mounika, Narayana, and Bojjaya, all of whom died while receiving treatment at various hospitals.

The Prohibition and Excise Department continues its investigation into the incident. Five cases have been registered against toddy shops in Hyderanagar, Shamshiguda, and KPHB Colony. These shops have been sealed, and 674 liters of toddy have been seized. Samples collected from the suspected adulterated toddy have been sent for laboratory analysis.

Additionally, the department has arrested five individuals—Nagesh Goud, Batti Srinivas Goud, T. Srinivas Goud, K. Kumar Goud, and Teegala Ramesh—and has sealed the shops involved. Personnel have been stationed at key hospitals in Kukatpally to monitor incoming patients showing similar symptoms and to ensure timely treatment.

Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao visited NIMS Hospital on Wednesday, spoke with the affected patients, and directed doctors to provide the best possible care. He also assured strict action against those responsible for adulteration to prevent such incidents in the future.

BJP MP Eatala Rajender also visited NIMS Hospital, met the patients, and called for a thorough investigation. He emphasized that the government should tighten control over toddy shops to prevent similar tragedies.
