New Delhi: On Monday, Congress Party President Mallikaarjun Kharge announced that from Wayanad’s seat, Priyanka Gandhi would contest a by-election from there.
This decision came on Monday evening when all the top officials of Congress held a meeting at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to determine which seat Rahul Gandhi should retain for himself.
In the recent Lok Sabha Polls, MP Rahul Gandhi contested the election from two constituencies: Raebareli in UP and Wayanad in Kerala. Rahul Gandhi can be a member of one constituency only; he has to vacate one seat as soon as possible. Due to this, this decision was taken.
Already, there were some indications that Rahul Gandhi might retain Raebareli’s seat.
Raebareli is the bastion of the Congress party.
Why Rahul Gandhi vacate his Wayanad seat?
In fact, under the Constitution, a person cannot be a member of both the Houses of Parliament or Parliament and State Legislature simultaneously. No MP can represent more than one seat in one house. Under Article 101(1) of the Constitution and Section 68(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, if a public representative wins an election from two seats, he has to vacate one seat within 14 days of the declaration of the result. If this is not done, then both his seats will automatically become vacant. Therefore, Rahul Gandhi had to leave one seat.
Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat is the stronghold of the Gandhi family. Sonia Gandhi has been reaching the Parliament by winning from here for a long time. Rahul Gandhi’s father, Rajiv Gandhi, contested elections from Amethi, and his great-grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, from Allahabad. Sonia Gandhi, grandmother Indira, and grandfather Feroze Gandhi have been MPs from the Rae Bareli seat. UP is a very important state in terms of politics. This time, along with Rae Bareli, Congress has also taken back Amethi. Therefore, to strengthen the party organization and make a comeback in UP politics, the Congress leadership wanted Rahul to remain MP from Rae Bareli. Therefore, he chose Rae Bareli instead of Wayanad.
