Over 400,000 individuals in Odisha and West Bengal have been relocated to safe shelters as Cyclone Dana approaches, with landfall anticipated on Thursday night. Both states are bracing for intense rainfall and strong winds until Friday morning.
Wind speeds are forecasted to reach up to 120 km/h, with the cyclonic storm expected to make landfall between Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port by Friday morning.
In Odisha, districts such as Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, and Puri are likely to face severe impacts, prompting the evacuation of about 300,000 residents so far. However, changes in the cyclone’s trajectory could affect neighboring areas, leading the government to aim for the evacuation of an additional 700,000 people.
In West Bengal, the districts most likely to be affected include Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata, and Jhargram.
Kolkata airport will halt flight operations for 15 hours, starting Thursday evening until Friday morning.
Additionally, the East Coast Railways in Odisha has canceled 198 trains, while Eastern Railway has called off 190 local trains in the Sealdah division of West Bengal from Thursday at 8 pm until Friday at 10 am. South Eastern Railway has also canceled 150 express and passenger trains traveling through Odisha.
