Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that peace in West Bengal can only be achieved once illegal infiltration into the state is halted. Speaking at the inauguration of a new passenger terminal and Maitri Dwar at the Land Port in Petrapole, North 24 Parganas district, Shah urged voters to bring about change in the state by 2026, promising that the BJP would completely stop illegal infiltration.
Shah criticized the Trinamool Congress government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for their handling of corruption. He questioned what Banerjee had done for the state’s development and highlighted that West Bengal had received Rs 7.74 lakh crore in Central funds over the past decade, significantly more than during the previous UPA government. However, he claimed that rampant corruption was hindering the effective use of these funds.
He further alleged that benefits from various centrally-sponsored schemes, such as MGNREGA and PMAY, primarily reached those affiliated with the Trinamool Congress rather than the genuine beneficiaries. Shah emphasized the importance of land ports in curbing cross-border smuggling and promoting medical and educational tourism, stating that these initiatives would contribute to the nation’s development.
Later, Shah is expected to attend an organizational meeting in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where he will discuss strategies for upcoming bypolls and focus on expanding party membership in West Bengal. There have been speculations about a possible meeting between Shah and the parents of a woman doctor who was tragically raped and murdered in August, but no confirmation had been received by the time this report was filed.
