New Delhi, July 17: Petrol and diesel prices may come down in the country. Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that if the price of crude oil remains at $65 per barrel for a long time, then we can expect a reduction in the price of petrol and diesel in the next 2-3 months. He said this in the ‘Energy Dialogue 2025’ going on in Delhi.
However, he also said that it depends on the stable situation. If any major geopolitical developments, such as Iran-Israel tensions, take place, the situation may change. In fact, oil prices have recently come down to $ 65 per barrel, due to which the profits of oil marketing companies are increasing. In such a situation, the government can give relief to the public by reducing the prices of petrol and diesel.
Companies get profit of up to Rs 15 per liter on petrol
According to rating agencies, currently oil companies are making a profit of Rs 12-15 per liter on petrol and Rs 6.12 on diesel. Despite this, oil companies have not reduced the prices of petrol and diesel for the last one year.
For the past several months, there is a possibility that oil companies will reduce prices. But the government had increased the excise duty by Rs 2 per liter in April. Under its cover, the companies avoided reducing prices. For a long time, oil companies have been avoiding reduction in prices citing losses.
The Centre is levying around Rs 22 tax per litre on petrol
The central government charges Rs 21.90 as tax on petrol. The Delhi government charges Rs15.40 as VAT. The total tax is Rs37.30 per liter. The central government charges Rs 17.80 per liter on diesel. The Delhi government is charging Rs12.83 per liter as VAT.
The total tax on both is Rs 30.63 per liter. The average consumption of petrol per person in the country is 2.80 liters per month and diesel is 6.32 liters per month. That means he pays ₹104.44 per month as tax on petrol and ₹193.58 per month on diesel. The total of both is ₹298 per month.
The most expensive petrol in the country is in Andhra Pradesh
Currently, the most expensive petrol in the country is in Andhra Pradesh. Here, one liter of petrol costs Rs 108.46 per liter. After this, Kerala costs Rs 107 per liter, Madhya Pradesh Rs 106 per liter and Bihar Rs 105 per liter. At the same time, the price of diesel in Andhra Pradesh is Rs 96 per liter. The price of petrol was decontrolled in 2010 by linking it to the global market and the price of diesel was decontrolled in 2014.
The annual consumption of petrol in the country is 4,750 crore liters
The annual consumption of petrol in the country is 4,750 crore liters i.e. 33.7 liters per person per year. The annual consumption of diesel is 10,700 crore liters i.e. 75.88 liters per person per year. This means the annual consumption of petrol-diesel per person is 109.6 liters i.e. 9.13 liters per month. This consumption increases at the rate of 10.6% annually.
