New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font on Tuesday at the Hyderabad House, where the two leaders engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation across economic, commercial, and social sectors.

The talks centered on strengthening India-Chile relations and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

Later in the day, President Boric is set to meet with his Indian counterpart, President Droupadi Murmu, followed by a banquet in his honor.

Earlier, President Boric paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. Reflecting on the experience, he shared on X, “Together with our delegation of ministers and parliamentarians, we paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, the memorial dedicated to him in New Delhi. His legacy serves as a reminder that our relationship with India is built on common interests, shared fundamental values, and a promising future for our people.”

The Chilean President arrived in New Delhi for a five-day state visit to India and was welcomed by Union Minister of State (MoS) Pabitra Margherita, receiving a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the airport.

After his arrival, Boric expressed optimism regarding the visit on X, stating, “6:30 a.m. in New Delhi, and from here we begin this State Visit to India, a momentous occasion for strengthening and diversifying our economic, political, and cultural relations at a time when multilateral cooperation is crucial. We are discussing the fifth-largest economy and the most populous country in the world, one with whom we share common ground and opportunities for growth in key areas such as agribusiness, innovation, and the creative industries.”

Highlighting the diverse delegation accompanying him, Boric noted, “We’re here to strengthen and deepen our ties, which is why I am joined by government officials, members of the National Congress, business leaders, innovators in culture and technology, distinguished professors, and students. Our schedule is packed, and I’ll keep you updated!”

Prior to meeting PM Modi, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar also met with President Boric to discuss enhancing the long-standing bilateral relationship. Jaishankar later shared on X, “Pleased to engage with President Gabriel Boric of Chile at the start of his State Visit to India. I appreciate his commitment to deepening our longstanding cooperation and am confident that his discussions with PM Narendra Modi today will lead to new partnerships and increased engagement.”

During his visit, President Boric will travel to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he plans to interact with political leaders, industry figures, startup entrepreneurs, and technology innovators to foster collaborations in key sectors.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that this State Visit presents an opportunity for both nations to review their bilateral relations and discuss regional and global issues of mutual concern.

“India-Chile relations have traditionally been characterized by warmth, friendship, and shared perspectives on a broad spectrum of issues,” the MEA stated. “Both countries cooperate extensively in multilateral forums and have similar views on climate change, renewable energy, and the expansion and reforms of the UN Security Council (UNSC).”

The MEA further highlighted that Chile has consistently supported India’s aspiration for a permanent seat on the UNSC, articulated in a Joint Statement at the conclusion of the official visit of the Chilean Foreign Minister to India in April 2003. Additionally, Chile shares India’s concerns regarding international terrorism and has condemned it in all its forms and manifestations.
