New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by Parliament, calling it a “watershed moment” in India’s pursuit of socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth.

In the early hours of Friday, the Rajya Sabha approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, with 128 votes in favor and 95 against, following a spirited debate. The Lok Sabha had passed the Bill just the previous day after nearly 12 hours of intense discussions.

On X, PM Modi stated, “The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth. This will especially benefit those who have long been marginalized and denied a voice and opportunities.”

He expressed gratitude to all Members of Parliament who participated in the discussions, shared their views, and contributed to strengthening the legislation. He also thanked the numerous individuals who provided valuable feedback to the Parliamentary committee, highlighting the importance of extensive dialogue and debate.

PM Modi emphasized that these reforms will introduce much-needed transparency to the Waqf system, which has historically suffered from a lack of accountability.

“For decades, the Waqf system was associated with a lack of transparency and accountability, particularly affecting Muslim women, underprivileged Muslims, and Pasmanda Muslims. The legislation approved by Parliament will enhance transparency and protect people’s rights,” he remarked.

He continued, “We are entering an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice. More broadly, we remain devoted to upholding the dignity of every citizen. This is how we build a stronger, more inclusive, and compassionate India.”

The Rajya Sabha’s debate on the matter began on Thursday and concluded with the Bill’s passage early Friday morning. The legislation will now be sent to President Droupadi Murmu for her approval before it becomes law.
