New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress party during his response in the Rajya Sabha to the motion of thanks for the President’s Address, accusing it of harboring “hatred and anger” towards B.R. Ambedkar and engaging in “license quota raj.” He asserted that the BJP-led government prioritizes the welfare of the poor, marginalized, and middle class.

Modi described the President’s speech as “inspirational” and noted that over 70 members participated in the debate. He expressed confusion over Congress’s opposition to the principle of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,’ suggesting that the party’s focus is solely on one family. He characterized Congress’s political model as based on “lies, corruption, family, and appeasement,” asserting that their priorities are misaligned with the needs of the nation.

The Prime Minister emphasized that for years, the demand for constitutional status for the OBC Commission was ignored by Congress due to political considerations, while his government granted that status. He accused Congress of attempting to sow division in society and criticized its historical treatment of Ambedkar, claiming that the party’s disdain led to its failure to award him the Bharat Ratna.

Modi recounted instances of censorship and suppression of free speech under various Congress-led governments, highlighting the experiences of notable figures in the arts and entertainment industry. He praised Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda for their long public service, noting that such appreciation is rare within their party.

He took a jab at Kharge during a recitation of a poem, suggesting that Congress should focus on its own governance rather than diminishing others. Modi reiterated the BJP government’s commitment to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ and outlined various initiatives aimed at economic growth, including tax relief for the middle class and support for small industries.

Modi pointed out that many areas in India had been neglected for decades, but his government has actively focused on their development. He mentioned that 25 crore people have risen out of poverty, contributing to a burgeoning middle class that is essential for the nation’s progress.

He criticized the bureaucratic hurdles of the past, which he attributed to the “license permit raj,” and underscored the importance of freeing the economy from such restrictions. Modi highlighted India’s transformation into one of the fastest-growing economies and the success of initiatives like “Make in India” and the Production Linked Incentive scheme.

He noted the significant growth in Khadi and Village Industries, which have surpassed a turnover of Rs 1.5 lakh crore. Modi emphasized that elected representatives must serve the people and that the vision of a developed India is a collective responsibility of all citizens. He warned that those who do not engage with this mission risk being left behind.

The motion of thanks was ultimately adopted by the House, following its earlier approval in the Lok Sabha after Modi’s address.
