Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate a new airport in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, as announced by Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla on Sunday. This airport, situated in the Vindhya region, has recently acquired its operating license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), making it the sixth airport in Madhya Pradesh to become operational.
While PM Modi will participate in the inauguration digitally from Varanasi, key figures such as Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla, and Rural Development Minister Prahlad Patel will be present at the airport.
The addition of Rewa Airport enhances the state’s infrastructure alongside existing airports in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Khajuraho, with the aim of boosting development and economic opportunities in the underdeveloped Vindhya region.
The initiative to develop the airport, located in the Chorahata area of Rewa where an airstrip has existed for decades, began around three years ago, although the formal announcement coincided with the upcoming Assembly elections in 2023. Rajendra Shukla, a native of Rewa, has been advocating for this airport since 2014, working diligently between Bhopal and New Delhi to realize the project.
Shukla termed the Rewa airport a major achievement for the Vindhya region, noting its capacity to accommodate up to 72-seater aircraft. He emphasized that the airport would enhance tourism, as well as support sectors such as healthcare, engineering, education, trade, and industry.
On September 10, the DGCA granted the airport its operating license, representing a pivotal milestone for economic growth and regional connectivity in Madhya Pradesh. The airport will cater to both passenger and cargo flights, expected to stimulate tourism, create employment opportunities, and facilitate trade. Rewa is known for its rich cultural and historical sites, and the new airport will improve access to these destinations, potentially increasing visitor traffic and business interest in the area.
The launch of Rewa Airport is anticipated to fill a connectivity gap in the region, contributing to Madhya Pradesh’s broader economic development by easing the movement of goods and people across critical areas.
