New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on residents of Delhi and nearby regions to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols following a 4.0-magnitude earthquake that struck early in the morning. In a message on X, he advised everyone to stay vigilant for possible aftershocks. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas. I urge everyone to stay calm, follow safety measures, and remain alert for potential aftershocks. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely,” stated PM Modi.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 km and was recorded at 5:36 AM. The sudden jolts caused many residents to flee their homes in panic. “Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.0, occurred on 17-02-24 at 5:36 AM IST, Latitude: 28.59°N & Longitude: 77.16°E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 9 km East of New Delhi,” the NCS reported on X.
One passenger at New Delhi railway station described the scene: “I was in the waiting lounge when everyone rushed out. It felt as if a bridge had collapsed.” A resident from Ghaziabad also commented on the intensity of the tremors, saying, “I have never experienced anything like this before. The entire building was shaking.”
