Hyderabad: Cyberabad police are intensifying their investigation following allegations from female students at CMR Engineering College about being secretly filmed in washrooms within the hostel. In response, the college management has announced a three-day holiday.

Police have detained the hostel warden, Preethi Reddy, along with six workers from the mess for questioning, and have confiscated their mobile phones.

Protests erupted on the college campus in Medchal, near Hyderabad, on Wednesday night after the students claimed they were surreptitiously recorded in the washrooms.

Authorities registered a case on Thursday under Sections 77 (voyeurism) and 125 (endangering personal safety) of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Medchal Police Station. The investigation reportedly revealed that the college management had employed male mess workers and housed them in rooms adjacent to the female washroom, giving them potential access to it through a ventilator.

A student reported seeing a shadow and alerted the warden, but received no response, leading to the protests. The students fear that videos of them may have been recorded.

The situation at the college became tense as student organizations, including NSUI, SFI, and ABVP, participated in the protests, calling for harsh action against those responsible.

To address the escalating tension and ongoing investigation, the college declared a three-day holiday.

According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, B. Srinivas Reddy, police have seized 12 mobile phones but have not yet found any evidence of recorded videos. They continue to check for possibly deleted footage.

Fingerprint experts are analyzing smudges found on the glass of the ventilator to see if they correspond with any of the workers’ fingerprints.

The ACP has urged parents to remain calm amid rumors suggesting that between 150 and 300 videos may have been recorded.

In the meantime, the Telangana State Women’s Commission has initiated its own investigation, taking notice of media reports and requesting a swift response from the Cyberabad Commissioner of Police.
