New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu expressed her profound sorrow over the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that resulted in the loss of lives. She offered her sincere condolences to the grieving families and wished for the swift recovery of those injured.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the fatalities in the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and pray for the prompt recovery of the injured,” President Murmu shared on X.
The unfortunate incident, which occurred around 10 PM on Saturday, claimed 18 lives as thousands of devotees rushed to board trains for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival, leading to severe overcrowding at the station. NDRF Commandant Daulat Ram Chaudhary confirmed that the situation has now stabilized, stating, “The situation is under control now. The injured have been evacuated, and we were informed about the stampede at platform number 14. Rescue operations are ongoing.”
DCP Railway KPS Malhotra indicated that while the authorities had anticipated a significant influx of people, the rapidity with which the chaos unfolded caught them off guard. “We knew a large crowd would gather, but events transpired swiftly, leading to this incident. The Railways will conduct a fact-finding inquiry to determine the cause,” he remarked to ANI.
In response, the Railway Board announced the formation of a two-member high-level committee to investigate the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. “A high-level committee has been established to look into the incident… The situation has stabilized, and passengers are being transported through special trains. Train operations at the station are now normal,” stated Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information & Publicity (ED/IP) for the Railway Board.
