Imphal: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), representing the Kuki-Zo tribal communities in Manipur, has reiterated its endorsement of President’s Rule in the state, expressing optimism that it will lead to essential political resolutions. Comprising various organizations such as the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) and Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the KZC welcomed the government’s decision, with KZC Secretary (Information) Khaikhohauh Gangte stating that they believe this move will create a foundation for peaceful coexistence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribes.

In response to comments from BJP’s Northeast in-charge, Sambit Patra, regarding the protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity, the KZC claimed that Patra may be unaware of the events of May 3, 2023, when Meitei individuals allegedly attacked the Kuki-Zo community, destroying homes and displacing thousands. The Council criticized the former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh for what they called ethnic cleansing, which they say has led to significant demographic changes and violence. They reported over 250 Kuki-Zo fatalities, the destruction of more than 7,000 homes, over 360 religious structures, and significant homelessness.

Patra had stated that with the imposition of President’s Rule, the 60-member state Assembly has been suspended but could be reactivated at the discretion of the President of India. He reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to maintaining peace and territorial integrity in Manipur, indicating that any illegal encroachments would be dealt with firmly.

Following N. Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9, discussions to appoint a new Chief Minister within the ruling BJP party began but failed to reach a consensus. This led the Governor to recommend imposition of President’s Rule. Senior BJP leaders indicated there is competition among various factions to decide on the next Chief Minister, with several names being discussed.

The BJP is focused on selecting a leader who can effectively represent both the Kuki-Zo-Hmar and Naga communities as well as the majority Meitei population, which makes up around 53% of Manipur’s residents, primarily in the Imphal Valley, while the tribal groups account for just over 40% and predominantly live in hill areas.
