Mohali: Punjab Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill on Wednesday condemned the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari and asserted that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
Gill further said she would be writing to top constitutional authorities seeking action against online platforms which, according to her, are contributing to a deteriorating social environment.
Speaking to the media, Raj Lali Gill said, “No one is allowed to take the law into their hands… It is work of the police department to take actions according to the law… I am writing to the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Chief Minister and the Governor to appeal to ban those online sites which are spoiling the atmosphere in society…”
Earlier on Tuesday, Akal Takht Sahib’s Head Granthi, Giani Malkit Singh justified the recent murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur stating that “nothing wrong” in what happened and that such incidents were justified for people like her who allegedly defamed the Sikh religion.
Speaking to reporters, Giani Malkit Singh said, “…Such a treatment should be meted out to people who defame the Sikh religion; Nothing wrong has happened…”
Kumari’s body was discovered in a car near Bathinda’s Adesh Hospital, days after she was reported missing.
According to Bathinda Superintendent of Police (SP) Narinder Singh, the police were informed of a “foul smell” emanating from a parked car in Adesh Hospital on June 12.
“Yesterday evening, we received a call that a car was parked in Adesh Hospital, and a foul smell was coming from it. A police team reached there – we found the body of a girl in the back seat of that car. In the preliminary investigation, the girl was identified as Kanchan Kumari, alias Kamal Kaur of Ludhiana,” Superintendent of Police Singh said.
The police officer further informed that the girl had left her home on June 9 to attend a promotional event. The police were investigating the matter, prioritising ascertaining the cause of her death and catching those responsible, the SP added.
Singh asserted that Kumari’s body was dumped in the car after her demise.
“She left her home on June 9 by telling her mother that she would attend a promotional event. The investigation is on. Our priority is to know how her body reached there and who is responsible for her death, and soon, action will be taken against those responsible. It is not the death spot; her body was dumped in the car after death. The car that the girl left her home in belongs to her,” Bathinda SP said.
