Puri: A disturbing incident has shaken the temple town of Puri, where an 80-year-old senior servitor of the Jagannath Temple, Jagannath Dixit, was reportedly murdered under unclear circumstances.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Gudia Sahi area within the limits of Puri Town Police. The deceased, a well-respected servitor from Mahasuar Sahi, had gone to the Jagannath Temple for his daily religious duties.
Bhimsen Dixit, the victim’s nephew, said, “My uncle had gone to the temple to perform his daily service on Wednesday. After he returned home, this tragic event happened. We are still uncertain about who is responsible and the motive behind it.”
Sources from the police revealed that the body was found near Rabeni Square in Gudia Sahi. CCTV footage reportedly shows someone leaving the body near the house of Naran Patjoshi, a resident of the same locality. It is said that Jagannath Dixit had gone to Patjoshi’s residence to recover some money, which led to a dispute that is suspected to have resulted in the murder.
The police recovered the body and launched an investigation. Blood stains on the victim’s body further indicate foul play.
Puri Police Superintendent Vinit Agrawal stated, “Initial investigations suggest the murder may have been caused by personal enmity. We have registered a case, intensified our inquiries, and are working to apprehend the suspect. More details will be shared once the investigation progresses.”
The accused, Pattjoshi, was arrested from his in-laws’ house in Sasan Damodarpur under Sadar Police limits on Wednesday evening. He is currently being questioned to uncover the exact motive behind the killing.
This incident has caused shock among the servitor community in Puri, with authorities under pressure to swiftly identify and arrest the perpetrator. The timing of the murder, during heavy police deployment for the Snana Yatra festival at the Jagannath Temple, has also raised questions about the effectiveness of the law and order situation in the city.
