New Delhi: In a significant speech in Parliament today, Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha addressed the urgent need for judicial reforms, focusing on the appointment process of judges and the post-retirement roles they are offered. His remarks come amid growing concerns over recent incidents, including judiciary.

Chadha emphasized that, like electoral and police reforms, judicial reforms are crucial to strengthening the nation’s legal system and ensuring greater public trust.

He specifically called for reforms in the collegium system, which currently oversees the appointment of judges, stating that it should be reformed and reinvented to be more transparent, merit-based, and point-driven.

“The collegium system should evolve with the times. We need a more transparent, point-based, and merit-based process for appointing judges to ensure the highest standards of judicial independence,” said Chadha.

The AAP leader also expressed concern over the longstanding tradition of offering post-retirement jobs to retired judges, which he believes could lead to conflicts of interest. Chadha proposed a mandatory minimum two-year cooling-off period for retired judges before they can take up any government-related positions.

Chadha’s call for judicial reforms has added momentum to the ongoing debate about ensuring a more independent, accountable, and transparent judicial system in India. His suggestions, particularly regarding the collegium and cooling-off period, are expected to spark further discussions in both legal and political circles.
