Jaipur: The Rajasthan Police have issued a warning for devotees heading to the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, starting January 13, advising them to exercise caution on social media and to protect themselves from cyber criminals.
Devotees are urged to book accommodations solely through official state channels, including authorized contact numbers and websites, as many fraudsters have set up schemes to deceive them.
Cyber criminals are known to exploit hotel, dharamshala, and guest house bookings by creating fake links and websites. Hemant Priyadarshi, Director General of Police (Cyber Crime), noted that with millions expected to attend the 45-day event, online bookings have already commenced, making it a prime target for scams.
“Fraudsters are tricking devotees into paying for cheap accommodations by promoting bogus websites, collecting advance fees without any actual reservations,” Priyadarshi explained.
To ensure safety, he stressed that online bookings should only be made through links verified by the Uttar Pradesh Police. An official list with names, locations, and contact information for verified accommodations can be found at kumbh.gov.in.
If anyone falls victim to these scams, they can report the incident by calling the national helpline number ‘1930’ or through the official cybercrime website at cybercrime.gov.in.
