Chhatarpur: Heavy rainfall led to another tragedy at Bageshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district, where the wall of an old building collapsed early Tuesday morning. The incident resulted in one death and nearly a dozen injuries. The wall that fell was part of a dharamshala (rest house) used by devotees for overnight stays at minimal charges.
The devotees, who were sleeping in the building, were buried under the debris when the wall collapsed. Local police arrived promptly to rescue those trapped and rushed the injured to a nearby government hospital in Chhatarpur. During treatment, one woman, Anita Devi from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, succumbed to her injuries. She had arrived at Bageshwar Dham to pray the previous day.
Dr. R.P. Gupta, a senior medical officer in Chhatarpur, confirmed that around 12 people were brought to the district hospital for treatment, with one dying during care. He added that efforts were ongoing to provide the best possible medical attention. Doctor Oajh Dosajh also mentioned that 11 victims had come from Bageshwar Dham, with some seriously injured individuals being referred to other hospitals while the rest were stable.
Most of the injured and the deceased’s family members had come from Uttar Pradesh for prayers. One injured person shared that during their sleep, the heavy rainfall caused a wall to collapse on them, leading to the death of his sister-in-law and injuries to others, including his daughter. He noted that the residents had paid Rs 200 for accommodation in the rest house.
This incident marks the second tragedy at Bageshwar Dham within a week. Earlier, on July 3, a devotee was killed, and eight others injured when a tent collapsed after a morning ‘aarti’. A heavy iron piece fell from the structure, striking a man on the head during rainfall, causing instant death. Several injured were taken to local health centers, with some transferred to the district hospital for serious injuries.
