Bangalore: On Friday, BJP MLAs created a ruckus in the Karnataka assembly over the issue of giving 4% reservation to Muslims in government contracts. BJP MLAs led by R Ashok tore the copy of the reservation bill and threw it towards the speaker.
After this, Speaker UT Khadar called the marshals and got the agitating MLAs out of the House. Also, 18 BJP MLAs were suspended from the proceedings of the Assembly for 6 months. Amidst the uproar, the government passed the bill to increase the salary of the Chief Minister, Ministers and MLAs by 100%.
The bill was introduced by Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil. After its passage, the salary of the Chief Minister will increase from Rs 75 thousand to Rs 1.5 lakh per month. The salary of the Chairman of the Legislative Council and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will increase from Rs 75 thousand to Rs 1.25 lakh.
Salary of ministers will also be doubled
Apart from the salary of MLAs, there is also a proposal to amend the Karnataka Minister Salary and Allowance Act, 1956. Through this, the salary of the minister will be increased from Rs 60 thousand to Rs 1.25 lakh. At the same time, there is a proposal to increase the supplementary allowance from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Currently, the Rs 1.2 lakh that ministers get as HRA can be increased to Rs 2 lakh.
In 6 years, only MPs and MLAs’ salaries increased in 10 professions
The working paper published by NITI Aayog in July 2024 shows that in the 6 years between 2018 and 2023, only the salaries and allowances of MPs and MLAs have increased in the country.
It said that MPs and MLAs have been placed in the first category of 10 different professions of the Periodic Labour Force Survey, which includes legislative professionals, senior officers and managers.
In this, the increase in salary and allowances in 6 years has been estimated on the basis of EPFO and other data. Apart from public representatives, salary and allowances have also increased in the category of plant-machine workers.
