Haryana: Security has been increased at the Haryana-Punjab Shambhu Border after Haryana Police removed concrete barricades early Thursday to ease farmers’ movement, who had been protesting for their various demands. The police used bulldozers to dismantle the barricades at the border.

On Wednesday evening, Punjab Police cleared the protesting farmers from the site. Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police, Nanak Singh, confirmed that no force was used as the farmers cooperated. He mentioned that the road would be cleared and reopened for traffic after the farmers were given proper warnings and a few chose to return home voluntarily. The police removed the structures and vehicles set up by the farmers at the protest.

Several farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on an indefinite fast, and Sarvan Singh Pandher from the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, were detained by the police.

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait condemned the Punjab government’s actions, criticizing the contradictory approach of the government, negotiating with farmer organizations while also arresting them. Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi suggested that this was part of a larger conspiracy against the farming community, claiming that the farmers had been deceived. BJP leader Fatehjung Singh Bajwa also expressed support for the farmers, accusing Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal of betraying them for political gains.

In defense of the actions, Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema explained that the move was aimed at opening the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, which have been closed for over a year, impacting traders and youth in the region. He emphasized that the farmers’ demands were directed at the Central government, and the protest should be moved to Delhi or another location to avoid hindering Punjab’s economy.
