New Delhi: Karnataka has declared a statewide bandh today, driven by widespread outrage over the recent assault on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver in Maharashtra, alongside protests against the controversial ‘Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill.’

This bandh, organized by over 3,000 pro-Kannada organizations, will see businesses, shops, and public transportation halt from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The protests focus on two primary concerns: the violent attack on the KSRTC driver by a group in Maharashtra, igniting anger within the Kannada community, and the ‘Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill,’ which critics believe could undermine the city’s governance.

Pro-Kannada activists are urging the state government to take decisive action against those responsible for the attack and to implement measures to prevent future incidents.

In Bengaluru, the bandh is expected to significantly disrupt public transport services, with both KSRTC and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) operations likely suspended. Commuters may face difficulties, although private cabs and auto-rickshaws are expected to continue operating, potentially at higher fares due to increased demand.

While the bandh has widespread support from various pro-Kannada groups, it has seen limited backing from farmer organizations and educational institutions, which will remain open across the state. Local businesses are anticipated to close in solidarity with the protests.

Despite the disruptions, emergency services will maintain normal operations. Authorities are advising citizens to plan their travels carefully and be aware of potential traffic obstructions throughout the day.
