New Delhi: In a notable political shift, former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sukhbir Dalal has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday. The announcement was made during a press conference at the Delhi BJP headquarters, attended by Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, BJP state president Virendra Sachdeva, and other senior leaders.
Dalal, who previously represented Mundka in the Delhi Assembly, stated that his decision to switch parties was not due to being denied a ticket but was based on his belief in the BJP’s policies. He criticized the AAP government for rampant corruption, claiming that it has overshadowed development efforts and neglected the needs of rural areas in Delhi. “Since Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘Sheesh Mahal’ was constructed, corruption in AAP has reached unprecedented levels,” he asserted.
He acknowledged the BJP’s support for his initiatives aimed at rural development and expressed his commitment to contributing to the nation’s progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Dalal’s move follows a trend of AAP leaders defecting to the BJP ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Recently, Delhi Ministers Kailash Gahlot and Harsharan Singh Balli also joined the BJP, alongside several others.
Balbir Singh, an executive member of the Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee from Vivek Vihar, joined Dalal in this political shift, citing his admiration for PM Modi’s policies as a key reason. He emphasized the Prime Minister’s extensive work for the Sikh community and noted his electoral success within the Gurdwara Management Committee, highlighting his appeal across religious lines.
Singh praised the BJP and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor for their recent initiatives benefiting the Sikh community, contrasting their actions with the inaction of other parties regarding the 1984 riots. “While everyone talks about 1984, they have not provided jobs or opportunities. The BJP has delivered both support and work,” he stated.
With the Delhi Assembly elections set for February 2025, AAP faces growing challenges as it seeks to secure a third consecutive term. In the 2020 elections, the party achieved a significant victory, winning 62 out of 70 seats. This latest political realignment puts additional pressure on AAP as it prepares to defend its position in the forthcoming elections.
