Bhopal: At least seven people were killed and three others severely injured in a road accident late Wednesday night on the newly constructed Badnawar-Ujjain four-lane highway under Badnawar police station in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district.

While police confirmed six fatalities, unverified reports suggest that one critically injured individual may have also died.

Amit Kushwaha, Officer-in-Charge of Badnawar Police Station, told media that the accident occurred when a tanker, driving on the wrong side of the road, first collided with a pickup truck and then crashed into a car following behind it. The tanker, which was heading towards Ujjain, was coming face-to-face with the other vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. The accident took place around 11 p.m. Four people died on the spot, while the others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Badnawar Civil Hospital.

The number of fatalities remains uncertain, as one of the injured reportedly succumbed to their injuries, but this has not been confirmed. The injured were taken to the hospital, and all three were reported to be in critical condition.

According to police sources, two individuals were trapped in the wreckage of the car and pickup, and were later extricated with the help of a crane. The tanker driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, and police have launched a search for him.

The victims are believed to be residents of Mandsaur, from the Sitamau police station area, and were reportedly returning home from Indore via Ujjain. The mangled vehicles and the victims’ bodies were transported to Badnawar Civil Hospital, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted in the morning.

The identities of the victims have not yet been determined, as the accident was so severe that the pickup became wedged under the tanker, making it difficult for police to immediately identify the deceased. According to additional reports, one person in the pickup died at the scene, while another was taken to the hospital. Three of the four passengers in the car were killed instantly, and one was injured and hospitalized.

Police are continuing their investigation to identify the victims and locate the fleeing tanker driver.
