On May 8, 2018, during the Karnataka assembly elections in Bengaluru, Rahul Gandhi called Amit Shah a murder accused in a press conference. A defamation case was filed against him by a BJP leader from Sultanpur. Earlier this year, Rahul Gandhi appeared in court on February 20.

The case has been going on for 5 years. In December 2023, the then judge of the MP/MLA court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi is on bail in this case

Rahul surrendered at Sultanpur court on 20 February 2024. The court granted him bail on two bonds of Rs 25,000 each. After this, the first date was fixed on 2 March. Sultanpur BJP leader Vijay Mishra had alleged that Rahul Gandhi had held a press conference during the Karnataka elections in Bengaluru on 8 May 2018. In this he had said- “Amit Shah is accused of murder. Therefore I don’t think Amit Shah has any credibility. The party which talks about honesty and purity, its president is accused of murder.”

Judge Loya was hearing the much talked about Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case of Gujarat. Amit Shah was the accused in this.

Parliament membership was canceled last year in the defamation case itself
