The Supreme Court of India has concluded a habeas corpus petition filed by a man who claimed that his two daughters were being held at the Isha Foundation ashram in Coimbatore. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, ruled that both women willingly chose to remain in the ashram without any coercion.
A habeas corpus petition aims to produce individuals believed to be missing or unlawfully detained. The Supreme Court initially supported an appeal to the Madras High Court related to this case. On October 3, the Supreme Court halted the investigation into the alleged unlawful detention by the Tamil Nadu police, instructing them to stop any actions based on previous High Court orders.
The bench accepted the status report from the police regarding the earlier directive, concluding that there was no need for further examination, as the petition’s grounds had been adequately addressed. This ruling followed the Isha Foundation’s challenge to a High Court order that required the police to prepare and submit a case against them.
