Surat, May 3: A 23-year-old private tutor from Surat has been arrested after eloping with her 13-year-old student, sparking outrage and raising critical questions about child safety in informal education settings. The case took a shocking turn when a medical examination revealed the tutor is five months pregnant, with the woman claiming the minor is the father, prompting authorities to order an urgent DNA test.
The incident began on April 25, when the tutor, a trusted figure in the boy’s life for three years, vanished with him from their residential society in broad daylight. CCTV footage captured the woman leaving with the boy, carrying a sling bag, suggesting premeditated intent. The boy had been her sole private student for the past year, a relationship that police say escalated dangerously over time.
A four-day manhunt ensued, with the pair travelling across Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Jaipur, and Vrindavan before being apprehended near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border. Investigations revealed that alleged sexual abuse occurred at the tutor’s residence and later at a hotel in Vadodara while they were on the run. The boy reportedly handed over clothes to the woman before their escape, and she purchased additional items to aid their flight.
A medical examination confirmed that the woman is five months pregnant. She claims the minor is the father. We have ordered DNA testing based on her statement, and both admitted to the physical relationship over several months.
The tutor faces charges under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita for kidnapping a minor and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for Sexual exploitation. Senior officials have labelled the case a severe breach of trust, exposing vulnerabilities in both formal and informal education systems. Legal experts have highlighted the need for greater awareness of grooming tactics used by adults in positions of authority.
The investigation continues, with further legal action pending the DNA test results. The case has ignited nationwide calls for stricter oversight of private tutoring enhanced child protection measures.
