Jammu: Security forces recovered five improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and two wireless sets after dismantling a terrorist hideout in Poonch district, officials announced on Monday.

The authorities said that five IEDs, weighing between half a kilogram and five kilograms, were destroyed in a controlled explosion at the scene, preventing possible terrorist attacks in the border region.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Army and the Jammu & Kashmir Police’s special operations group (SoG) late Sunday evening at Suranthal in the Marhote area of Surankote.

Two of the IEDs had been concealed inside steel buckets, while the other three were packed in tiffin boxes. Along with these, officials recovered two wireless sets, five packets of urea, a five-liter gas cylinder, binoculars, woollen caps, blankets, trousers, and utensils from the hideout.

Following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians—including 25 tourists and one local—security agencies intensified their crackdown across Kashmir and Jammu regions targeting terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs), and sympathizers.

Enhanced security measures, including additional checkpoints at highways and sensitive locations such as key installations and tourist attractions, have been implemented across the state.

Since the attack, a comprehensive, technologically supported operation has been ongoing in south Kashmir to track down the five terrorists believed to be behind the assault on defenseless tourists, which drew widespread national outrage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has authorized the armed forces to take strong action in response.

In the wake of the Pahalgam incident, the government announced several measures, including the deportation of all Pakistani nationals, closing the Attari-Wagah border crossing, suspending the Indus Water Treaty, halting all trade and cultural exchanges with Pakistan, and stopping mail and parcel services from the neighboring country.
