Mumbai: Tesla is preparing to launch its first experience centre in Mumbai on July 15, marking an important step as Elon Musk’s company moves closer to entering the Indian market, despite not currently manufacturing vehicles in the country. The experience centre will be located in a 4,000-square-foot retail space in Mumbai, near the Apple flagship store, and will function as a showroom.

This initiative is part of Tesla’s broader expansion plans in India. In June, the company leased a commercial space in Mumbai’s Kurla West, which is expected to serve as a vehicle service centre. Presently, Tesla has four properties in India, including an engineering hub in Pune, a registered office in Bengaluru, and a temporary office near BKC. The leased space in Kurla West, covering 24,500 square feet, is designated for a service facility, with a lease agreement for five years, starting at a monthly rent of Rs 37.53 lakh. Over the lease period, Tesla will spend nearly Rs 25 crore, including a Rs 2.25 crore security deposit.

Tesla has explicitly stated that its focus in India is solely on vehicle sales, not manufacturing, as confirmed by government officials. Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy mentioned that Tesla’s plans are limited to opening showrooms for now, and the company has no interest in setting up manufacturing operations in India at this stage.

This move aligns with India’s forward-looking EV policies, which aim to attract international automakers to invest in the electric vehicle sector and position India as a global hub for e-vehicle manufacturing in the future.
