Three people died and thousands have been affected in a flood caused by heavy rains in Manipur’s Imphal valley. Officials gave this information on Thursday.
A 34-year-old man was killed and three others injured in a landslide triggered by heavy rain on Thonglang Road in Senapati district on Wednesday. Officials said that an 83-year-old woman drowned in Senapati river.
One person died due to electrocution from an electric pole
He said that a 75-year-old man died of electrocution after coming in contact with an electric pole during the rain in Imphal on Wednesday.
The official further said that many areas were submerged due to rising water level of river Imphal and hundreds of houses were flooded in Imphal valley, due to which people took shelter in nearby communal buildings.
“At least 86 areas of Imphal West district, including Khuman Lumpak, Nagaram, Sagolband, Uripok, Keesamthong and Paona areas, have been reported flooded due to heavy flow in Nambul river.
Imphal riverbanks have been washed away due to incessant rains. It broke near Keerang, Khabam and Lariangabum Likai areas of the eastern district and water entered several areas, inundating hundreds of houses.”
“Several areas of Hingang and Khurai assembly constituencies of Imphal East district have been badly affected, with flood water reaching chest level in many parts,” an official said. Officials said that a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is engaged in the rescue operation.

Expressing concern over the floods, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, “Many people and livestock have been affected due to breaching of river banks in many areas. State government officials, security and NDRF All concerned authorities including staff and local volunteers are providing assistance.”
Many places flooded
Meanwhile, the Irang Beli bridge on NH 37 connecting Imphal and Silchar collapsed at Taobam village in Noni district, disrupting road traffic, officials said. In a statement, SP office of Imphal East district said, “Due to incessant rains for the past few days, many places have been flooded. Police department and other agencies are helping to rescue the trapped people. Appeal to the public. They are advised not to obstruct the rescue operations by coming out in large numbers and crowding the place.
