Gurugram: A team from the Gurugram Police’s crime branch apprehended a notorious criminal along with two accomplices after a gunfight late Tuesday into Wednesday night, according to authorities.
The suspects have been identified as 28-year-old Arif, 27-year-old Arif alias Mandal from Palwal, and 33-year-old Rashid alias Yusuf alias Kake from Nuh. Police reports indicate that Rashid has been implicated in 49 criminal cases, which include gang activities, murder, attempted murder, robbery, assaulting a police team, and ATM thefts.
The two Arifs are linked to two attempted murder cases and cow smuggling offenses, while one cow smuggling case has been recorded against the latter.
On the night of the incident, police teams from Farrukhnagar and Sohna received a tip about cows being stolen in a canter vehicle from Ullawas village in Gurugram’s Sector-65. When the police spotted the vehicle loaded with two cows near Medwas village, they signaled the driver to stop. Instead, the driver accelerated in an attempt to flee.
The police pursued and cornered the canter near Medwas village, at which point the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire, hitting a police vehicle. Despite warnings to cease fire, the suspects continued shooting, leading to police returning fire in self-defense, injuring two of the suspects in the legs.
All three suspects were apprehended at the scene, with the injured being taken to a hospital for treatment. A case has been registered against them at the Sector-65 Police Station.
In total, ten rounds were discharged during the encounter, with four coming from the suspects and six from the police. Authorities recovered the stolen canter, a country-made pistol, a second pistol, one live cartridge, ten empty shell casings, and one cow along with a calf.
The canter had been stolen from the Bilaspur police station on December 24, while the cow and calf were taken from a dairy in Ullawas village. Rashid had a previous cow smuggling charge in 2009 that resulted in the death of a Gurugram police officer. Rashid and Arif are currently receiving medical care; upon discharge, they will be formally arrested and interrogated as per legal protocols, according to ACP (crime) Varun Dahiya.
